ਅਰਥ: (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਅਕਲ ਹੋਛੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਉਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਦਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ; ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਧੋਖਾ (ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ) ਉਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਧੋਖਾ ਹੀ ਧੋਖਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪ) ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ) ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! ਜੇ ਹਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇ,ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ। ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ-ਰੂਪ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਸਦਾ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! ਜੇ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਨ, ਤਾਂ ਸੱਚਾ ਹਰੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲਏ ॥੨॥ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ, ਭਗਤ ਹਨ ਉਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹਨ। ਉਹੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ-ਰੂਪ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਰੀ (ਦੇ ਭਜਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਤੀਰਥ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨੬॥

सलोकु मः ४ ॥
अंतरि अगिआनु भई मति मधिम सतिगुर की परतीति नाही ॥ अंदरि कपटु सभु कपटो करि जाणै कपटे खपहि खपाही ॥ सतिगुर का भाणा चिति न आवै आपणै सुआइ फिराही ॥ किरपा करे जे आपणी ता नानक सबदि समाही ॥१॥ मः ४ ॥ मनमुख माइआ मोहि विआपे दूजै भाइ मनूआ थिरु नाहि ॥ अनदिनु जलत रहहि दिनु राती हउमै खपहि खपाहि ॥ अंतरि लोभु महा गुबारा तिन कै निकटि न कोई जाहि ॥ ओइ आपि दुखी सुखु कबहू न पावहि जनमि मरहि मरि जाहि ॥ नानक बखसि लए प्रभु साचा जि गुर चरनी चितु लाहि ॥२॥ पउड़ी ॥ संत भगत परवाणु जो प्रभि भाइआ ॥ सेई बिचखण जंत जिनी हरि धिआइआ ॥ अम्रितु नामु निधानु भोजनु खाइआ ॥ संत जना की धूरि मसतकि लाइआ ॥ नानक भए पुनीत हरि तीरथि नाइआ ॥२६॥

अर्थ: (मनमुख के) हिरदे में अज्ञान है, (उस की) अकल (मति) नादान होती है और सतगुरु ऊपर उस को सिदक नहीं होता; मन में धोखा (होने के कारन संसार में भी) वह सारा धोखा ही धोखा समझता है। (मनमुख मनुष्य खुद) दुःखी होते हैं ( व ओरों को) दुखी करते हैं; सतिगुरु का हुकम उनके चित मे नही आता (मतलब,भाणा नही मांनते) आेर अपनी मत के पीछे भटकते रहते हैं ; नानक जी! जे हरी अपनी कॄपा करे ,ता ही वह गुरू के शब्द मे लीन होते हैं ॥१॥ माया के मोह मे फसे हुए मनमुख का मन माया के प्यार मे एक जगह नही टिकता। हर समय दिन रात (माया मे) सड़ते रहते हैं। अहंकार मे आप दुखी होते हैं ओर दुसरो को करते हैं। उनके अंदर लोभ रूपी बडा अंधेरा होता है, कोई मनुष उनके पास नही जाता। वह अपने अाप ही दुखी रहते हैं,कभी सुखी नही होते, सदा जन्म मरन के चक्करों मे पडे रहते हैं। नानक जी! जे वह गुरू के चरनो मे चित जोडन तो सचा हरी उनको माफ कर दे ॥२॥ जो मनुष्य प्रभू को प्यारे हैं, वह संत हैं, वह भगत हैं वही कबूल हैं। वही मनुष्य सही है जो हरी नाम जपते हैं। आतमिक जीवन देन वाला नाम ख़जाना-रूपी भोजन खाते हैं, ओर संतो की चरन-धूड़ अपने माथे पर लगाते हैं। नानक जी!(इस तरह के मनुष्य) हरी (के भजन-रूपी) तीर्थ मे नहाते हैं ओर पवित्र हो जाते हैं ॥२६॥

If He grants His Grace, then Nanak is absorbed into the Word of the Shabad. ||1|| Fourth Mehla: The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya; in the love of duality, their minds are unsteady. Night and day, they are burning; day and night, they are totally ruined by their egotism. Within them, is the total pitch darkness of greed, and no one even approaches them. They themselves are miserable, and they never find peace; they are born, only to die, and die again. O Nanak, the True Lord God forgives those, who focus their consciousness on the Guru’s feet. ||2|| Pauree: That Saint, that devotee, is acceptable, who is loved by God. Those beings are wise, who meditate on the Lord. They eat the food, the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. They apply the dust of the feet of the Saints to their foreheads. ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਮਿੱਤਰੋ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰੋ। (ਗੁਰੂ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ, ਇਹ) ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਗੁਰੂ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਭਲਾ ਸਮਝੋ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਅਨੋਖੀ (ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਅਸੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ? ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਤੇ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੜ ਲਾ ਲਏ।੧। ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਹੇ ਭਰਾਵੋ! ਸੁਣੋ, ਛੇਤੀ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਜਾਓ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਖਰਚੀ (ਪੱਲੇ) ਬੰਨ੍ਹੋ। ਮਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਿਓ ਕਿ ਅੱਜ (ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਲਵਾਂਗੇ) ਭਲਕੇ (ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਲਵਾਂਗੇ। ਟਾਲ ਮਟੋਲੇ ਨਾਹ ਕਰਨੇ) ।੨। ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰੋ। (ਇਸ ਜਾਪ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਸੰਤ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਚੋਜ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਚੋਜੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੩। ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-) ਹੇ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਰੱਖ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਮਿਲੀ ਰਹੇ।੪।੪।

अर्थ: हे गुरसिख मित्रो! गुरू के बताए हुए राह पर चलो। (गुरू कहता है कि परमात्मा की सिफत सालाह किया केरो, ये) जो कुछ गुरू कहता है, इसको (अपने लिए) भला समझो, (क्योंकि) प्रभू की सिफत सालाह अनोखी (तब्दीली जीवन में पैदा कर देती है)।1। रहाउ। हे भाई! हम जीव माया के मोह में बहुत अँधे हो के मायावी पदार्थों के जहर में मगन रहते हैं। हम कैसे गुरू के बताए हुए राह पर चल सकते हैं? सुखों को देने वाला गुरू (खुद ही) मेहर करे, और हमें अपने साथ लगा ले।1। हे हरी के संत जनो! हे भाईयो! सुनो, जल्दी ही गुरू की शरण पड़ जाओ। गुरू की शरण पड़ कर (जीवन यात्रा के लिए) परमात्मा के नाम की खर्ची (पल्ले) बाँधो। कहीं ये ना समझ लेना कि आज (ये काम कर लेंगे) सवेरे (ये काम कर लेंगे। टाल-मटोल नहीं करना)।2। हे हरी के संत जनो! परमात्मा के नाम का जाप किया करो। (इस जाप की बरकति से) हरी का संत हरी की रजा में चलने लग जाता है। हे भाई! जो मनुष्य परमात्मा का नाम जपते हैं, वे परमात्मा का रूप हो जाते हैं। रंग-तमाशे करने वाला तमाशेबाज (चोजी) प्रभू उन्हें मिल जाता है।3। हे दास नानक! (कह–) हे बनवारी प्रभू! मुझे तेरा नाम जपने की चाहत लगी हुई है। मेहर कर, मुझे साध-संगति में मिलाए रख, मुझे तेरे संत-जनों की धूड़ मिली रहे।4।4।
