ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਮਧਿਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਪਟੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਪਟੇ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹੀ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਮਃ ੪ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਨੂਆ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹਿ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਦੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੇਈ ਬਿਚਖਣ ਜੰਤ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਹਰਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥

ਅਰਥ: (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਅਕਲ ਹੋਛੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਉਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਦਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ; ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਧੋਖਾ (ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ) ਉਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਧੋਖਾ ਹੀ ਧੋਖਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪ) ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ) ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! ਜੇ ਹਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇ,ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ। ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ-ਰੂਪ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਸਦਾ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! ਜੇ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਨ, ਤਾਂ ਸੱਚਾ ਹਰੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲਏ ॥੨॥ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ, ਭਗਤ ਹਨ ਉਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹਨ। ਉਹੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ-ਰੂਪ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਰੀ (ਦੇ ਭਜਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਤੀਰਥ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨੬॥

सलोकु मः ४ ॥
अंतरि अगिआनु भई मति मधिम सतिगुर की परतीति नाही ॥ अंदरि कपटु सभु कपटो करि जाणै कपटे खपहि खपाही ॥ सतिगुर का भाणा चिति न आवै आपणै सुआइ फिराही ॥ किरपा करे जे आपणी ता नानक सबदि समाही ॥१॥ मः ४ ॥ मनमुख माइआ मोहि विआपे दूजै भाइ मनूआ थिरु नाहि ॥ अनदिनु जलत रहहि दिनु राती हउमै खपहि खपाहि ॥ अंतरि लोभु महा गुबारा तिन कै निकटि न कोई जाहि ॥ ओइ आपि दुखी सुखु कबहू न पावहि जनमि मरहि मरि जाहि ॥ नानक बखसि लए प्रभु साचा जि गुर चरनी चितु लाहि ॥२॥ पउड़ी ॥ संत भगत परवाणु जो प्रभि भाइआ ॥ सेई बिचखण जंत जिनी हरि धिआइआ ॥ अम्रितु नामु निधानु भोजनु खाइआ ॥ संत जना की धूरि मसतकि लाइआ ॥ नानक भए पुनीत हरि तीरथि नाइआ ॥२६॥

अर्थ: (मनमुख के) हिरदे में अज्ञान है, (उस की) अकल (मति) नादान होती है और सतगुरु ऊपर उस को सिदक नहीं होता; मन में धोखा (होने के कारन संसार में भी) वह सारा धोखा ही धोखा समझता है। (मनमुख मनुष्य खुद) दुःखी होते हैं ( व ओरों को) दुखी करते हैं; सतिगुरु का हुकम उनके चित मे नही आता (मतलब,भाणा नही मांनते) आेर अपनी मत के पीछे भटकते रहते हैं ; नानक जी! जे हरी अपनी कॄपा करे ,ता ही वह गुरू के शब्द मे लीन होते हैं ॥१॥ माया के मोह मे फसे हुए मनमुख का मन माया के प्यार मे एक जगह नही टिकता। हर समय दिन रात (माया मे) सड़ते रहते हैं। अहंकार मे आप दुखी होते हैं ओर दुसरो को करते हैं। उनके अंदर लोभ रूपी बडा अंधेरा होता है, कोई मनुष उनके पास नही जाता। वह अपने अाप ही दुखी रहते हैं,कभी सुखी नही होते, सदा जन्म मरन के चक्करों मे पडे रहते हैं। नानक जी! जे वह गुरू के चरनो मे चित जोडन तो सचा हरी उनको माफ कर दे ॥२॥ जो मनुष्य प्रभू को प्यारे हैं, वह संत हैं, वह भगत हैं वही कबूल हैं। वही मनुष्य सही है जो हरी नाम जपते हैं। आतमिक जीवन देन वाला नाम ख़जाना-रूपी भोजन खाते हैं, ओर संतो की चरन-धूड़ अपने माथे पर लगाते हैं। नानक जी!(इस तरह के मनुष्य) हरी (के भजन-रूपी) तीर्थ मे नहाते हैं ओर पवित्र हो जाते हैं ॥२६॥

Shalok, Fourth Mehla: He has spiritual ignorance within, and his intellect is dull and dim; he does not place his faith in the True Guru. He has deceit within himself, and so he sees deception in all others; through his deceptions, he is totally ruined. The True Guru’s Will does not enter into his consciousness, and so he wanders around, pursuing his own interests. If He grants His Grace, then Nanak is absorbed into the Word of the Shabad. ||1|| Fourth Mehla: The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya; in the love of duality, their minds are unsteady. Night and day, they are burning; day and night, they are totally ruined by their egotism. Within them, is the total pitch darkness of greed, and no one even approaches them. They themselves are miserable, and they never find peace; they are born, only to die, and die again. O Nanak, the True Lord God forgives those, who focus their consciousness on the Guru’s feet. ||2|| Pauree: That Saint, that devotee, is acceptable, who is loved by God. Those beings are wise, who meditate on the Lord. They eat the food, the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. They apply the dust of the feet of the Saints to their foreheads. O Nanak, they are purified, bathing in the sacred shrine of the Lord. ||26||

ਵਿਆਖਿਆ: ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਾਮ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ। ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਐਸਾ) ਧਨ (ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਸਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਿਬਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ (ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ) ਲਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਕਰਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ (-ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਸੂਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ) ਦਾ ਇਹ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ ਰੰਗ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੀ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਗਹਣਾ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿੰਦ-ਦਾਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਭੁੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਮਿਲੀ) ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਮੌਜੂਦ ਚਲਿਆ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ) ਹੈ। ਉਹ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ) ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੩॥

सदा धनु अंतरि नामु समाले ॥ जीअ जंत जिनहि प्रतिपाले ॥ मुकति पदारथु तिन कउ पाए ॥ हरि कै नामि रते लिव लाए ॥१॥ गुर सेवा ते हरि नामु धनु पावै ॥ अंतरि परगासु हरि नामु धिआवै ॥ रहाउ ॥ इहु हरि रंगु गूड़ा धन पिर होइ ॥ सांति सीगारु रावे प्रभु सोइ ॥ हउमै विचि प्रभु कोइ न पाए ॥ मूलहु भुला जनमु गवाए ॥२॥ गुर ते साति सहज सुखु बाणी ॥ सेवा साची नामि समाणी ॥ सबदि मिलै प्रीतमु सदा धिआए ॥ साच नामि वडिआई पाए ॥३॥ आपे करता जुगि जुगि सोइ ॥ नदरि करे मेलावा होइ ॥ गुरबाणी ते हरि मंनि वसाए ॥ नानक साचि रते प्रभि आपि मिलाए ॥४॥३॥

अर्थ: हे भाई! नाम धन को अपने अंदर संभाल कर रख। उस परमात्मा का नाम (ऐसा) धन (है जो) सदा साथ निभाता है, जिस परमात्मा ने सारे जीवों की पालना (करने की ज़िम्मेदारी) ली हुई है। हे भाई! विकारों को ख़त्म करने वाला नाम-धन उन मनुष्यों को मिलता है, जो सुरत जोड़ कर परमात्मा के नाम (-रंग) में रंगे रहते हैं ॥१॥ हे भाई! गुरू की (बताई) सेवा करने से (मनुष्य) परमात्मा का नाम-धन हासिल कर लेता है। जो मनुष्य परमात्मा का नाम सिमरता है, उस के अंदर (आत्मिक जीवन की) समझ पैदा हो जाती है ॥ रहाउ ॥ हे भाई! प्रभू-पती (के प्रेम) का यह गहरा रंग उस जीव-स्त्री को चढ़ता है, जो (आत्मिक) शांति को (अपने जीवन का) आभूषण बनाती है, वह जीव-स्त्री उस प्रभू को हर समय हृदय में बसाई रखती है। परन्तु अहंकार में (रह कर) कोई भी जीव परमात्मा को नहीं मिल सकता। अपने जिंद-दाते को भुला हुआ मनुष्य अपना मनुष्या जन्म व्यर्थ गंवा जाता है ॥२॥ हे भाई! गुरू से (मिली) बाणी की बरकत से आत्मिक शांति प्राप्त होती है, आत्मिक अडोलता का आनंद मिलता है। (गुरू की बताई) सेवा सदा साथ निभने वाली चीज़ है (इस की बरकत से परमातमा के) नाम में लीनता हो जाती है। जो मनुष्य गुरू के श़ब्द में जुड़ा रहता है, वह प्रीतम-प्रभू को सदा सिमरता रहता है। सदा-थिर प्रभू के नाम में लीन हो कर (परलोक में) इज़्ज़त मिलती है ॥३॥ जो करतार प्रत्येक जुग में आप ही (मौजूद चला आ रहा) है। वह (जिस मनुष्य ऊपर मेहर की) निगाह करता है (उस मनुष्य का उस से) मिलाप हो जाता है। वह मनुष्य गुरू की बाणी की बरकत से परमातमा को अपने मन में वसा लेता है। हे नानक जी! जिन मनुष्यों को प्रभू ने आप (अपने चरणों में) मिलाया है, वह उस सदा-थिर (के प्रेम-रंग) में रंगे रहते हैं ॥४॥३॥

Meaning: Gather in and cherish forever the wealth of the Lord’s Name, deep within; He cherishes and nurtures all beings and creatures. They alone obtain the treasure of Liberation, Who are lovingly imbued with, and focused on the Lord’s Name. ||1|| Serving the Guru, one obtains the wealth of the Lord’s Name. He is illumined and enlightened within, and he meditates on the Lord’s Name. || Pause || This love for the Lord is like the love of the bride for her husband. God ravishes and enjoys the soul-bride who is adorned with peace and tranquility. No one finds God through egotism. Wandering away from the Primal Lord, the root of all, one wastes his life in vain. ||2|| Tranquility, celestial peace, pleasure and the Word of His Bani come from the Guru. True is that service, which leads one to merge in the Naam. Blessed with the Word of the Shabad, he meditates forever on the Lord, the Beloved. Through the True Name, glorious greatness is obtained. ||3|| The Creator Himself abides throughout the ages. If He casts His Glance of Grace, then we meet Him. Through the Word of Gurbani, the Lord comes to dwell in the mind. O Nanak Ji, God unites with Himself those who are imbued with Truth. ||4||3||
